Hi Everyone! My name is Julianna Fonseca and I am your reigning Miss Massachusetts Collegiate 2014. I created this blog to share my experiences throughout my reign as well as my road to nationals. I'll start off by telling you a little bit about myself, my pageant experiences, and my newly acquired title. I am 17 years old and a Senior at Seekonk High School. I am enrolled in every AP course offered at my high school, an honor roll student, and a member of my class' student council. I was on the volleyball team for two years, a cheerleader for the other two, and have been a Girl Scout for 11 years. I aspire to major in Actuarial Science with a minor in communications. I studied Portuguese for four years and now able to speak, write, and read it fluently. I also studied Mandarin Chinese for a year (It was really hard...I can't say anything more than Ba which means dad lol). I love to learn and traveling has been a passion of mine. I have traveled extensively throughout the USA but I've also toured European countries including Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy. I plan on study abroad as many semesters as I can as well as after I graduate.
I became involved in pageants my junior year of high school. I had always wanted to be in a pageant and be a model but my mom wanted to make me wait until I was older. My mom finally let me when I was 16 and I did all the research, all the fundraising, and all the preparations by myself. She told me she would support me all the way but it was my hobby so it was my responsibility (but she became a pageant mom right after the first one). I competed in Miss MA Teen USA and then Miss MA Most Outstanding Teen, both in the same year. I didn't place in either but I learned a lot about myself and the way pageants work. Competing in pageants has strengthened my confidence, my self-esteem, and my ability to communicate with others.
Then in November I competed in the Miss MA Collegiate pageant and came home with the title. I also won the Overall Score Award- we combined the MA and NH Jr. High, High School, and Collegiate pageants into one and I received the highest score. The pageant consisted of a 6 min interview, a fun-fashion segment, an evening gown segment, and an on-stage question. A question that may arise is why I was crowned the "Collegiate" title rather than "High School". Because I am a Senior and will have graduated and be enrolled in college by the time nationals is held, I was considered "Collegiate". However, with that said, the age bracket is from 17 to 27...I was the youngest contestant in my state division and I will be the same at nationals. As a titleholder it is my job to promote the state and national platform, The Crown CARES (Creating A Respectable Environment in Schools). Throughout my reign I will be visiting schools, reading anti-bullying books, and giving presentations. My first appearance will be on Wednesday so I'll be sure to post again at the end of the month.
With having the title for only a couple of months, it has opened and will continue to open doors for me. I have been featured in newspapers, on radio stations, and online. One opportunity I am afforded that I would like to share with you all is that I am now going to be the host of my very own show! My local television station in my community wanted to created a talk show that connects the community to what's going on at the high school and when they found out about my title, they wanted me to be the host! It will be called "Julianna's Warrior Nation" (we are the Seekonk Warriors) and I will be filming the first show in the beginning of February. I will be interviewing students in my school to discuss major events happening, community service opportunities, and much more so stay tuned!
I hope you will enjoy my blog and follow me throughout my reign. I will post periodically to update everyone on my appearances, my show, the road to nationals, and my year as a whole! Thank you for reading and feel free to contact me with questions, booking an appearance, or anything else.
